Humor is Unifying

In today's society, the number of difficult topics we have to deal with have increased, and exposing people to these topics has become increasingly difficult. I believe that this is why humor and satire have become increasingly popular ways to speak of these issues in the most neutral and inoffensive way possible. Why else are memes so popular in the to the millennial generation? They are humorous ways that honesty connect people, and they do often poke fun at political or social issues. For this reason I think humor is integral to our society, because these topics cannot be ignored just because they are difficult. Humorists and comedians also are key factors in connecting our society. For example, Daliso Chaponda, a Malawian comedian, brought up heavy issues regarding racial injustice and other racism in many of his stand-ups. However, since he has familiarity with this topic and brought it up in a way a multitude of backgrounds could relate to, he justified his position to speak on these topics and his point could better resonate with people. Something funny is going to be remembered, so if heavy topics can be introduced in a light way without devaluing their importance, society can feel more comfortable addressing these topics and working together for solutions.

I hate stand-up comedy. Daliso Chaponda's was the only one that ever made me laugh out loud. Check it out!

  1. I definitely agree with your claim that humor illuminates uncomfortable topics and unites people together. I like how you mentioned that something funny is more likely to be remembered and shared, which is a valuable reason as to why comedians are so important to societal improvement. Great work, nice video too!

  2. The fact that you used your opinion and linked it with your claim creates a more personal view on the topic. I agree with your view on how many use humour to expose the problems we have today. Really nice work! :)
